Financial planning and investing is often portrayed as being complicated and dull. We think that, once you know the basics, it can be simple and even fun. That’s why we offer free finance courses to top up your knowledge.

Free Finance Courses

In 2014 we partnered with the Open University Business School to establish the True Potential Centre for the Public Understanding of Finance. Over five years, we’ve committed £1.4 million of funding to help build a series of three free personal finance courses for the British public. The free and interactive online finance courses are designed to help you expand your financial knowledge, learn more about saving and investing, and boost your confidence when it comes to money matters.

Free Personal Finance Courses

Managing My Money

Our first personal finance course, ‘Managing My Money’, was presented on FutureLearn in Spring of 2014 as part of their MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) program and fast became one of their most popular modules. The course is now available on its permanent home, the Open University’s OpenLearn, where over 63,000 people have registered since launch.

This course aims to improve your personal finance skills. You will learn how to create a budget and use it to make better spending choices. The course also covers debts, investments and how mortgages work. You will also explore pension planning and the different types of insurance you might consider.

You can learn at your own pace with OpenLearn or take a structured and moderated course with FutureLearn.

Managing My Investments

On our second free online course, you’ll learn about different investment choices, the returns and risks associated with each, and the evidence about their historical performance. You’ll explore investment strategies, as well as the practicalities of financial markets. Plus, you’ll look at how to avoid the individual and group behavioural traits that can impair effective investment decision-making.

You can learn at your own pace with OpenLearn or take a structured and moderated course with FutureLearn.

Managing My Financial Journey

This third course studies the financial services providers – the banks, building societies and insurance companies as well as the intermediaries like independent financial advisers (IFAs) – and the regulations relating to the way financial products are sold.

The modules also explore the rights of consumers of financial services, including how to make complaints and seek compensation.

What Our Learners Say

Over 100,000 learners have already registered for our free online courses, here is some of their feedback:

“I have learnt so much on this course – and found it surprisingly easy and fun to follow – that I feel financially confident enough to make my own financial decisions… This experience has been so enjoyable that I have signed up for two more courses!”

S. Rossi

“What an eye-opener! Thank you all very much both to staff and to other students who have made comments, suggested new things and generally helped me on my way.”

H. Kitchen

“I worked through (the course) and really enjoyed it. I learned quite a lot in the pensions bit, but the most powerful thing it did for me was to show me a new way of considering my finances and the importance of continually assessing the situation, reviewing plans and making new ones… I have made some changes which will, over a period of three months, save me just under £4,000.”
