5 Things You Need To Know (13/11/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Earthquake

The deadliest earthquake of 2017 has struck Iran and Iraq, with more than 400 people killed and 7,000 injured.

2. Brexit

The UK Parliament is to be given the final say on Brexit, with Brexit Secretary David Davis saying that Parliament will have the power to stop any final Brexit deal.

“The agreement will only hold if Parliament approves it,” he said.

MPs will have the opportunity to reject or amend legislation, with terms of the Brexit needing to become law as new legislation.

3. Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson has apologised for comments he made about a British-Iranian woman being held prisoner in Iran. The Foreign Secretary has been accused of inadvertently damaging her case for freedom.

“Of course I apologise for the distress, for the suffering that has been caused by the impression I gave that I believed she was there in a professional capacity. She was there on holiday,” he told Parliament. “I do apologise. Of course I retract any suggestion she was there in a professional capacity.”
