4 Things You Need To Know (4/10/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Theresa May speech

Theresa May has delivered her main speech to the Conservative party conference, promising a “compassionate modern Britain.”

Details of the speech included a cap on energy prices, and more council houses.

However, the speech seems certain to be remembered for the intervention of a prankster, and Mrs May’s struggling with a very bad cough. In a further frustration, part of the stage set fell off.

Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservatives, tweeted, “If ever the PM needed a metaphor for service and duty and resolution through adversity, that battling performance was it! Huge respect.”

2. Las Vegas

The girlfriend of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock has arrived back in the United States from the Phillipines.

Marilou Danley landed in Los Angeles, and was met off her flight by federal agents.

No motive has been established for Paddock’s gun massacre. President Donald Trump has said more is being learned “That’ll be announced at the appropriate time.”

3. Barcelona

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont has stated the intention to declare independence from Spain “at the end of this week or the beginning of next”.

However, Spain’s King Felipe has said the referendum on independence was illegal and undemocratic.

It isn’t clear how Catalonia and Spain will resolve the dispute, with the European Union calling for “time to talk.”

4. Amazon

The European Commission has ordered Amazon to pay 250 million Euros in back taxes.

The ruling accuses the US online retailer of having an unfair tax deal in Luxembourg. Amazon has denied owing any back tax.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager has said “almost three-quarters of Amazon’s profits were not taxed.”
