4 Things You Need To Know (25/9/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. North Korea

North Korea has said that Donald Trump has declared war with last week’s UN speech and follow up military flights close to the Korean coast

Ri Yong-ho, North Korea’s foreign minister, said his country reserves the right to shoot down the US bombers.

Meanwhile, Trump tweeted over the weekend to say “they [North Korea] won’t be around much longer!” if the current rhetoric is echoed.

2. German election

The right wing AfD party has made gains in the German elections, prompting a vow from German Chancellor Angela Merkel to win back disillusioned voters.

Although Mrs Merkel earned a fourth term in office, she has endured losses for her party, and the rise in German right wing nationalism has caused controversy.

Mrs Merkel will now look to form a coalition with one of the other German parties.

The AfD meanwhile has said they will fight “an invasion of foreigners”, amid tensions over Mrs Merkel’s immigration policy in recent years.

3. Uber

Uber are set for talks with London’s transport regulator after last week’s decision to revoke their licence prompted an apology from the company.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber Chief Executive, said sorry for “mistakes we’ve made.”

The decision to revoke the licence caused heated debate, with many Londoners expressing concern at what the implications would be for ease and cost of transport without Uber as an option.

4. FIFA ends poppy ban

FIFA has agreed that teams can wear the poppy emblem on their shirts during international matches in the upcoming memorial period.

The football world governing body caused fury last year when it dictated that the poppy couldn’t be used. Theresa May called the decision “utterly outrageous.”

Guidelines have now been changed to accommodate agreed non-political slogans such as the poppy.
