4 Things You Need To Know (2/10/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Las Vegas

At least 58 people have been killed, and over five hundred have been injured, during a mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Stephen Paddock, a 64 year old resident in the state, has been named as the shooter. Shots were fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, with the target being an open air concert attended by 22,000 people. Paddock killed himself as police stormed the room where he had based himself with ten guns.

President Donald Trump described the shooting as an “act of pure evil.”

2. Monarch

Monarch Airlines has gone into administration and stopped trading with immediate effect. The sudden cancellation of all flights affects around 860,000 passengers.

The Civil Aviation Authority will now charter flights to bring home 110,000 stranded travelers.

3. Conservative party conference

The Conservative party conference is underway, with Chancellor Philip Hammond announcing £300 million for rail modernization in the north of England.

He has also took the opportunity to warn against Labour’s “socialist fantasy” under Jeremy Corbyn.

4. Catalonia

Catalonia’s independence referendum has resulted in a vote for secession from Spain.

Polling was marred by ugly scenes, as police tried to stop the vote going ahead. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has described it as an “illegal vote.”
