5 Things You Need To Know (28/7/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Brexit transition deadline of 2022

Chancellor Philip Hammond has said the Brexit transition must end by 2022. The UK’s exit from the EU is set to be complete on 29 March 2019, but there has been increasing talk about a potential “implementation” period afterwards. This would give time to ensure a smooth transition.

2. Ireland border

The Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, has said that Ireland is opposed to an “economic border” with Northern Ireland.

“It’s the United Kingdom – it’s Britain that has decided to leave, and if they want to put forward smart solutions, technological solutions for borders of the future and all of that, that’s up to them,” he said. “What we are not going to do is design a border for the Brexiteers.”

3. Corbyn on student debts

The Conservatives have written to Labour shadow chancellor John McDonnell and challenged him to explain how Labour would have paid for proposals to cancel student debt.

Since the general election promise, Jeremy Corbyn has been accused of backtracking on the issue. He insists he never made a commitment to write off student debt.

4. Obamacare

Donald Trump’s latest attempt to repeal Obamacare has failed, with at least three Republicans voting against the latest bill.

Trump has responded by tweeting, “3 Republicans and 48 Democrats let the American people down. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. Watch!”

5. North Korean missile lands in Japanese waters

North Korea has conducted another missile test, with the object appearing to land in Japanese waters.

The test is the latest in a series of North Korean strikes which are in breach of a UN ban.
