5 Things You Need To Know (27/6/17)

1. US warns Syria

The US has alleged that Syria are preparing a further chemical weapons attack. A stern warning has been issued, stating “The United States is in Syria to eliminate the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. If, however, Mr Assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons, he and his military will pay a heavy price.”

The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, has also warned that Russia and Iran will additionally be held responsible for such an attack.

2. The Queen will get a pay rise

The Queen is set for a six million pounds pay increase from public funds. This would mean an 8% rise on her current income. She currently costs the taxpayer 65p a year.

Last year, the Queen’s official net expenditure increased by two million to almost £42 million.

3. Sturgeon to reset indyref2

Nicola Sturgeon has said she will “reset” plans for a second Scottish independence referendum. She had previously targeted autumn 2018 or spring 2019 for indyref2.

Her change of course follows a poor performance from the SNP in the general election, with 21 seats lost and the Conservatives making gains in Scotland.

4. Google fined 2.42 billion euros

Google has been fined 2.42 billion euros by the European Commission, due to charges of distorting the market by promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of its search results.

5. Ransomware attack

A major cyber-attack has affected companies around the world, with ransomware forcing systems to go down unless a bitcoin payment is made.

The Ukraine has been severely impacted by the attack, with airports and the energy grid being targeted.
