5 Things You Need To Know (2/6/17)

1. Trump pulls out of climate deal

President Donald Trump has been criticised by world leaders for pulling the USA out of the Paris climate agreement. Mr Trump announced the withdrawal during a Rose Garden press conference, saying, “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.” In a rare move for a former President, Barack Obama has released a statement criticising Mr Trump’s decision.

2. May’s reaction to Trump

Theresa May has said she is “disappointed” with President Trump’s decision, however, she hasn’t signed a joint condemnation produced by France, Italy and Germany. Jeremy Corbyn has criticised her closeness to Trump, tweeting “Pulling out of the Paris Climate Deal is reckless and regressive. Instead of handholding, I’ll work for a sustainable future for our planet.”

3. Corbyn on jobs

Jeremy Corbyn has vowed to create a million quality jobs if he wins the general election next week. This will involve putting £250 billion into an industry, and scrapping zero hour contracts.

4. Conservative candidate charged

The Conservative candidate for South Thanet has been charged for alleged overspending in the 2015 general election campaign. Craig Mackinlay is running again in next week’s election. He defeated Nigel Farage to become MP for South Thanet in the 2015 general election.

5. Trump’s travel ban goes to the supreme court

The White House has gone to the US Supreme Court to reinstate a travel ban on people from seven Muslim countries. A ruling could be made in two weeks.
