5 Things You Need To Know (21/8/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Barcelona

A man wearing an explosive belt has been shot by police, in the area to the west of Barcelona, Spanish media have reported.

Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, is the chief suspect in relation to last Thursday’s terrorist attack. Police announced earlier today that the search was being extended across Europe. It isn’t clear if the shooting today involved Aboyaaqoub.

2. Big Ben

The bongs of Big Ben were sounded for the final time at noon today before beginning a four year silence for renovation work. This will mark the longest period of silence in the 157 year history of the clock, although it will still sound for special occasions such as New Year.

The renovation work is expected to cost £29 million.

3. US Navy collision

The USS John S McCain has collided with an oil tanker near Singapore, the US Navy has reported.

Ten sailors are currently missing in the incident, and five have been injured. President Donald Trump reacted on Twitter, “Thoughts & prayers are w/ our @USNavy sailors aboard the #USSJohnSMcCain where search & rescue efforts are underway.”

4. Tactical voting

An estimated 6.5 million people voted tactically in the last general election, an Electoral Reform Society report has stated. The research shows that 20% said they planned to vote for a candidate most likely to beat the politician they disliked. Theresa May ended up remaining Prime Minister after the June 8 vote, but saw her majority diminished.

5. Eclipse

The first US coast to coast solar eclipse since 1918 is set to wow Americans today. Meanwhile, the UK will also enjoy a partial eclipse at around 8pm this evening.
