1. Mosque attack
One man is dead and ten other people are injured after what is being described as a terrorist attack on a mosque in Finsbury Park.
A white van drove into a crowd of people around midnight, just after Ramadan prayers had finished at the mosque. The driver was detained by people at the scene, and police arrived to arrest him shortly afterwards.
Theresa May has described the attack as “sickening”, while Jeremy Corbyn said “A terrorist attack on any faith or community is an attack on all of us. We must and will stand united against those who seek to divide us.”
2. Grenfell Tower
Seventy-Nine people are now are either dead or missing presumed dead following the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, police have said. The number may still change.
The Prime Minister has announced a five million pound fund to help families affected by the fire. However, anger has built amongst residents and answers are being demanded as to how this ever happened.
3. Brexit negotiations begin
Brexit negotiations started in Brussels today, with David Davis meeting the EU’s negotiator Michel Barnier.
Mr Davis said, “We are starting this negotiation in a positive and constructive tone, determined to build a strong and special partnership between ourselves and our European allies and friends for the future.”
4. Russia reacts to American action in Syria
Russia has reacted angrily after a US jet shot down a Syrian jet over Raqqa. Vladimir Putin’s forces are backing Syria, and this latest incident has resulted in Russia suspending its communications hotline with the US. The hotline had been designed to avoid any potential collisions, with both Russian and US jets operating in Syria.
Furthermore, Russia say they will treat “any aircraft” operating west of the Euphrates river as targets.
5. Record temperatures
Health warnings have been issued, with the UK currently experiencing temperatures higher than 30 Celsius. It is officially the hottest day of the year.
