5 Things You Need To Know (17/8/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. A-level results

A-level grades have risen for the first time in six years, however, university applications have decreased, with thousands of spaces still left to fill.

Boys have overtaken girls in the results, marking a significant change, as girls have done better at A-levels for the past seventeen years. Indeed, the overall trend is for girls to outperform boys at every stage of education.

A*/A grades were awarded to 26.3% of candidates.

2. Corbyn reacts to Champion resignation

Jeremy Corbyn has reacted to the resignation of Sarah Champion MP as his shadows equalities minister, stating that it is wrong to blame “an entire ethnic community” for child abuse scandals.

Champion had produced a newspaper piece saying “Britain has a problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls”.

However, Sajid Javid, the Conservative Communities Secretary, has said “Corbyn wrong to sack Sarah Champion. We need an honest open debate on child sexual exploitation, including racial motivation.”

3. Hicks appointed Trump’s interim communications director

Hope Hicks has been appointed as Donald Trump’s new interim communications director. The 28 year old has worked for the Trump family for five years, and is a close friend of Ivanka Trump.

Hicks replaces Anthony Scaramucci, who was fired from the position after just five days. Her first days in the new position could be testing, with the President’s recent Trump Tower press conference causing friction and controversy.

4. Brexit talks

Prime Minister Theresa May has not denied speculation that the next phase of Brexit talks could be delayed until December. She has instead said there “is a lot to be done.”

5. Barcelona crash

In a developing story, a van has crashed in the centre of Barcelona, with reports of several people being injured.

The Ministry Of The Interior tweeted “There has just been a massive crash on the Ramblas in Barcelona by a person with a van. There are injured.”
