5 Things You Need To Know (12/7/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Trump Jnr

President Trump has defended Donald Trump Jnr’s meeting with a Russian lawyer during last year’s presidential election campaign.

He tweeted to say “My son Donald did a good job last night. He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!”

Trump Jnr met with the Russian lawyer based on the promise of information that would incriminate Hillary Clinton. He didn’t tell his father about the meeting.

2. UK unemployment

Unemployment in the UK has dropped by 64,000 to 1.49 million in the three months to May, the Office for National Statistics has revealed.

This means that the unemployment rate is now at its lowest point since 1975. However, wage increases are continuing to suffer. Earnings are only up by 2.0%, but inflation is at a near four year high of 2.9%.

3. Supreme court rules on equal pension rights

A landmark ruling has been made on equal pension rights, following 66 year old John Walker’s case that his husband should be entitled to the same pension rights as a wife.

The ruling means that Mr Walker’s husband is entitled to a spouse’s pension, and the government will now review the implications of the ruling.

4. Andy Murray

Andy Murray has been knocked out of Wimbledon, following a 3-6 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-1 defeat to Sam Querrey.

Last year’s champion had gone into the tournament with a hip injury, and was clearly struggling towards the end of today’s match.

Roger Federer remains the favourite to win the tournament.

5. EU response to Boris Johnson

European Union negotiator Michel Barnier has responded to Boris Johnson’s “go whistle” comment, saying that “I am not hearing any whistling, just a clock ticking.”

Mr Johnson had made the comment in regards to the rumoured £100 billion Brexit bill.
