4 Things You Need To Know (12/4/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Islamist Extremist Suspect Detained After Dortmund Bomb Attack

Police in Germany have detained an Islamist Extremist suspect, following on from Tuesday’s bomb attack on Borrusia Dortmund’s team bus.

One of three explosive devices found contained metal strips, and two letters were found claiming responsibility for the attack.

Dortmund’s Marc Bartra was injured in the bombing, while a police officer suffered trauma from the noise of the blasts.

2. Putin And Trump’s War Of Words

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have escalated their war of words, with the US President accusing Putin of backing “an animal” in Bashir al-Assad.

“Frankly, Putin is backing a person that’s truly an evil person… if Russia didn’t go in and back this animal, you wouldn’t have a problem right now,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, Putin has said US / Russian relations have “deteriorated” since Trump took office.

Before the US’s Syrian bombing, both Putin and Trump had been accused of having an allegiance with each other. They’re now undoubtedly at odds.

3. 2,300 Council Employees On Six Figure Salaries

Research from the TaxPayers’ Alliance shows that at least 2,300 council employees are on six figure salaries. The number of public sector workers being paid in excess of £100,000 a year is increasing.

The research shows 539 council employees are earning more than the Prime Minister.

The company claims these latest numbers show their turnaround plans are ahead of schedule.

4. Vodafone Scraps Roaming Fees In Europe

Vodafone has scrapped roaming charges for UK customers across 40 countries, allowing customers to use their phones in Europe at no additional cost.

The move will only apply to new and upgraded contracts for now. The EU is expected to remove all roaming charges from June, which could explain Vodafone’s early move on its competitors.
