4 Things You Need To Know (4/9/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. US seeking tougher UN approach to North Korea

Nikki Haley, the US envoy to the UN, has asked the Security Council to enforce “the strongest possible measures” against North Korea.

The reclusive state, headed by Kim Jong-un, tested a nuclear bomb over the weekend, and is believed to be preparing for more missile launches.

President Donald Trump has suggested the US may consider ceasing trade with any country that does business with North Korea. China is the main party involved in such trade.

2. Royal baby

Prince William and Kate Middleton are expecting their third child, with The Queen reportedly “delighted with the news.”

Kensington Palace announced the news, alongside the fact that the Duchess is suffering from severe morning sickness.

3. Bitcoin

The virtual currency Bitcoin has crossed the $5,000 barrier for the first time, with CoinDesk price index putting it at $5,103.91 on Saturday.

The value has since dropped back down, but the $5,000 barrier reperents a significant figure, given that one bitcoin traded for less than $1,000 at the start of the year.

4. McDonald’s strike

UK McDonald’s employees from two stores are taking part in their first ever strike. The workers are disputing working conditions and zero-hour contracts, with The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union saying that employees want at least £10 an hour and secure contracts.

However, McDonald’s have pointed out that three pay rises have been delivered since April 2016, and less than 0.01% of their workforce took part in today’s strike.
