1. Storm Harvey hits Louisiana

After causing widespread flooding and devastation in Houston and the Texas coast, Storm Harvey has now made landfall in Louisiana.

New Orleans is one of the major locations at risk of flash floods.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has visited Corpus Christi, Texas. “This storm, it’s epic what happened. But you know what, it happened in Texas and Texas can handle anything,” he said.

2. Theresa May

Theresa May is visiting Japan, and has used the occasion to call for China to do more in response to North Korea’s “illegal and provocative” weapons testing. She has said the UK is looking at ways of increasing pressure on Pyongyang.

Her other aim of this trip is to strengthen relations with Japan, ahead of the UK leaving the European Union in 2019.

3. Labour resignation

Kezia Dugdale has resigned as the leader of the Scottish Labour party, admitting “the party needs a new leader with fresh energy, drive and a new mandate.”

Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP leader and Scotland’s First Minister, said “We may be opponents, but @kezdugdale led her party with guts and determination and I admired her for that. I wish her well for the future.”

Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservatives, said “Leadership can be tough and @kezdugdale deserves the thanks of her party for putting in the hard yards. I wish her well.”

4. Queensferry bridge

The UK’s highest bridge is now open to traffic, with the £1.35 billion Queensferry Crossing between Edinburgh and Fife opening at 2am on Wednesday morning.
