4 Things You Need To Know (14/6/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Tower fire

Six people have died following a huge fire that devastated large parts of a tower block in London. Sadly, the Met police are reporting that the number is likely to rise.

The cause of the fire at the 24 storey Grenfell Tower is unknown. The incident was first reported at 00:54, with forty fire engines and two hundred firefighters tackling the blaze.

2. DUP Conservative deal

The deal between the DUP and Conservatives could be delayed until next week, as a result of the Grenfell tower blaze.

The final details of the deal are yet to be confirmed. If the deal is delayed, it could cause the Queen’s Speech to be delayed by another week. It had been due to take place on Monday. It could also mean a delay to the start of Brexit negotiations.

3. David Cameron on Theresa May

David Cameron has said Theresa May must listen to other parties over Brexit, following the loss of her majority in last week’s general election. The Financial Times quotes Mr Cameron as saying, “It’s going to be difficult, there’s no doubt about that, but perhaps an opportunity to consult more widely with the other parties on how best we can achieve it.”

4. Republican Congressman shot

A Republican congressman was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a baseball practice in Washington DC this morning.

House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise is expected to survive. President Donald Trump has praised the heroism of two police officers who reacted to the incident, with both officers sustaining bullet wound injuries.

The attacker, James T Hodgkinson, later died from the injuries he sustained during the incident.
